Minecraft - Feed The Beast Launcher - Part 2

Welcome to the second part about the Feed the Beast Launcher. Also known as the FTB launcher. This is part two which will cover the modpack section. Want to know more about the rest of the launcher?
This tab is split into two parts. The left part contains all of the available modpacks currently supported. The right part shows more information about the selected modpack. Most of the time it tells you about all of the mods available in the modpack.

Filter Settings

On to the filter settings. Via this function you can filter out certain modpacks that meet your requirements. Hit the “filter settings” in the top right corner and a new window will pop up. Set your filter information and click on the “Apply Filter” button. This makes searching for a specific modpack easier.

Edit Mod Pack

Next up is the “Edit Mod Pack” feature. This is awesome. Most modpack contain a multitude of mods with various types of backgrounds. Like technology, focused mods or magic focused mods. Via this feature, you can enable/disable mod in a modpack. So this makes modpacks customizable.
The tab “Mods” lists all of the normal mods. I recommend not altering with the “JarMods” and “CoreMods” section since most of  those mods are required for the modpack to run. But you can disable and enable all of the normal mods. Be warned though, disabling a mod that was previously used, e.g. you have placed items from that mod in the world might cause Minecraft to crash. Since it tries to load items from that mod that is now disabled.

Server

If you want to host a modpack than you need the server files. Select to mod you want to host and click on “Download Server”. It usually comes in a .zip format. Extract the contents and start the server. Almost always this is done outside of the FTB launcher. Yet it provides you with this option. Pretty neat, isn’t it?

Starting a Modpack

Having read everything about the modpacks and made the choice to play a certain modpack, perhaps even customized it. Let us look at a couple of other things you need.
First of you need to select the version of the modpack you would like to play. FTB sets this to recommended by default. You can however change this to any version that they support. The dropdown list can be found right beside the ”Download Server” button in the top middle. This is useful if you need to join a server which has not updated to the latest version. In other cases I recommend to keep it on recommended.
You also need to have a valid Minecraft username and password. On the bottom there is a button which should say “Create Profile”. Click that button and a new window will popup. Enter you Minecraft credentials and click on Add. If you want to update / remove your account from the FTB launcher, select you username and click on the Edit button. This will allow you to update / remove. When removing your account your Minecraft account is still active. It simply won’t remember you  in the FTB launcher, so you need to reenter you credentials if you want to play again.
Having this setup you can finally hit the Launch button in the bottom right corner and the FTB launcher will download the modpack for you. It will start Minecraft and use the provided Minecraft account to play the game with. Have fun playing Minecraft with a modpack!
